About
I am a self-taught artist and have been painting for about 20 years. I have painted in a range of media using watercolour, gouache, acrylic, pencils and more recently oils and mixed media.
Increasingly I create abstract work responding to my own life – my memories, emotions, my health, relationships and the journey I am on to be an artist. My unconscious is often the driver of a piece with many works starting from random mark making but evolving in my head into a complete work. Within the works there is often a conflict between my practical, project-oriented self (straight lines, defined shapes) and my creative side (curves and colours). These are constantly in contention in my head, but in my art they co-exist, often in the same work.
Nature is also a major inspiration for my work be it the sea, flowers and trees, mountains or moors – I aim to draw the viewer in to feelings of light and colour, the wonder and power of nature and how we and it are all connected. Working from memories, sketches or photographs the resulting work may be abstract or representative depending on my response to the subject.
